BENDE FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY 2027: ODDS FAVORS Dr. DESMOND CHIMA ANYASO (OFUJI)

In the February 25, 2023 National Assembly election, the ruling Labour Party (LP) in Àbia State coasted to victory in five of the eight federal constituencies in the State. Labour Party won in the following federal constituencies – Arochukwu/Ohafia, Isuikwuato/Umunneochi, Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South, Isiala Ngwa North/South and Osisioma/Obingwa/Ugwunagbo.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) clinched Ukwa West/East Federal Constituency, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) was victorious in Aba North/South Federal Constituency, while the All Progressives Congress (APC) grabbed Bende Federal Constituency.

With the defection of the member representing Aba North/South Federal Constituency elected under the platform of APGA, Alex Mascot Ikwecheghi to LP, the party now controls six federal constituencies.

The configuration leaves APC in authority of two federal constituencies – Bende and Ukwa West/East with the defection of Chief Chris Nkwonta from PDP to APC.

However, as the 2027 general elections gather momentum, the question on the lips of political observers is; “will the LP capture the eight federal constituencies of the state in 2027?

Interestingly, where many political observers will beam their searchlights more will be the Bende Federal Constituency, which may best be described as the clash of Titans. It will be between the member representing Bende Federal Constituency and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu and Billionaire business mogul and grassroot politician, Dr. Desmond Chima Anyaso (Ofuji)

The Deputy Speaker is running under the banner of the APC and Dr. Chima Anyaso on the platform of Labour Party.

Who then will the people of Bende Federal Constituency root for?

The popular thinking is that having represented Bende Federal Constituency twice, the Deputy Speaker should give way for contenders from other zones of the federal constituency. What is more, the open bitter diatribes between the Deputy Speaker and the Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District and former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu will certainly not be a credit to Rt . Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu re-election bid, as it is believed that the recent Peace accord reached by the two may just be described as a graveyard peace.

A philanthropist of repute, Dr. Desmond Chima Anyaso (Ofuji) generosity can not be overemphasized and will likely boost the chances of his electoral victory come next year.

Beyond these analysis is the fact that Dr. Anyaso has everything going on for him, including his popularity, having ran as a Deputy Governorship candidate of the YPP in the 2023 governorship election, and his several previous failed attempts to represent Bende Federal Constituency on the ticket of PDP.

To this extent, he is a household name and very popular in all parts of Bende Federal constituency.
