NGWA DAY 2025 AND THE EXPECTATIONS

To stem the corroding consequences of cultural imperialism occasioned by colonialism in our clime, and neocolonialism occasioned by migration of the present generation to various lands in search of greener pastures and the consequent effect on our culture and tradition, the Ngwa nation, the most populous ethnic subgroup in the South-East geo-political zone has embarked on aggressive renaissance to preserve her culture, custom, antiquity and traditional practices.

In concert with other sister organizations such as Ngwa National Association USA, Elite Club of Nigeria, Ngwa Development Initiative, Oha Ngwa UK, Amadi Social Club, Ngwa Woman Cultural Association, Ngwa Daughters Association and lots more, Ngwa Social Club is the arrowhead of the reawakening and revival crusade of Ngwa history and consciousness.

The idea of resuscitating the Ngwa culture and tradition that are fast going extinct incepted in December 2023 when a resolution was unanimously passed by Ndi Ngwa during the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of Ngwa Social Club at Aba Sports Club to institutionalize every December 28 as Ngwa Day. The inaugural edition of Ngwa Day, a day set aside to put in the front burner and spread abroad the cultural heritage, promote the unity, oneness and overall Ngwaness of Ndi Ngwa was held on December 28, 2024 at Abayi Primary School, Abayi, along Aba-Owerri Road, Aba.

The keynote speaker was erudite Professor Ogbonna Onuoha, the Executive Director, National Institute of Nigerian Languages (NINLAN), Aba. His lecture was titled: “Ngwaness: Today & Expectations For Tomorrow”. Preparations for the 2nd edition of Ngwa Day slated for Sunday, December 28, 2025, at Ngwa High School, Aba are being well coordinated.

Another eminent Ngwa scholar, Professor Sam Erugo, (SAN) will be the keynote speaker. He will lecture on: “Ngwaness: UMUNNA EHILA.”Elaborating on the Ngwa Day Celebration, the 1st Vice President of Ngwa Social Club and Chairman of the Planning Committee for this 2025 Edition, Dr. (Sir) Chukwuma Offor, FCA in a chat with Ngwafactnews Reporters elucidates: “Ngwaness is a concept developed by Ngwa Social Club that connotes everything good about Ndi Ngwa. It is an Ngwa centric ideology that believes in Ngwa causes devoid of self-interest and individualistic pursuits that have characterized the Ngwa man lately. It is a people centered concept geared towards the common good of Ndi Ngwa and puts their collective interest above personal or sectional interests.”Dr. Offor continued: “Ngwa Day is a festival of Ngwa culture, tradition, custom, arts, antiquity, crafts, cuisine and so forth. It is a celebration of everything Ngwa, the reawakening that OMELALA EJIGHI ALALA. It is an assemblage of everything good about Ala Ngwa and a gathering of Ngwa sons and daughters at home and in the diaspora.” The Ngwa cultural revivalism is a clarion call to all Ngwa both at home and in the diaspora to come to the understanding that “rururu nbu ugwu eze” This is indeed splendid.

However, beyond cultural reawakening and revivalism which the Ngwa Day is designed to achieve, as well as uniting Ndi Ngwa for development purposes and bringing the people to speak with one voice, there are a myriad of challenges the Ngwa nation is expected to grapple with to fully realize the Ngwaness of the clan as well as maintain the integrity and dignity of the Ngwa man.
The task which the amalgam of Ngwa associations should seriously address is the construction of a befitting All Ngwa Cultural Hall in the Enyimba city.
To say the least, it is disgusting, disheartening and very shameful that over the years, the Ngwa nation has not deemed it proper to construct an architectural edifice of its own. It is also noteworthy that Ngwa Social Club is pioneering this effort with its Ovu Ngwa projects in Aba for Ndi Ngwa as a whole as the name depicts.
Again, in liaison with her Ukwa brethren, representatives of Ukwa la Ngwa at the National Assembly and other leaders of thought in Ukwa la Ngwa, the Ngwa Social Club in collaboration with other sister Ukwa la Ngwa associations should intensify lobby for the creation of Aba State this time. Actualizing the creation of Aba State will be a dream come true for the peoples of Ukwa la Ngwa given that it’s demand is the oldest in the country and is equitable and fair.

The prevailing security threat posed on the indigenous of Ngwa by external groups which intelligence report indicate have penetrated all corners of Ngwa land, needs our collective urgent attention. To forestall the massacre of innocent natives it behoves the Ngwa Social Club and its affiliates to in liaison with relevant stakeholders to arrest these threats and ensure that Ala Ngwa is safe.
Ngwa day has come to stay in perpetuity on 28th of December of every year, All Ngwa Sons and Daughters all over the globe are enjoined to keep the date and to come together and Celebrate the Common Heritage of our NGWANESS!
