The Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Senate Committee Chairman on Privatisation and Commercialisation, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu by every dint of imagination is a loyal and faithful party man. Chief Whip of the 9th Senate and Senate Committee Chairman on Banking, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, popularly called OUK is also a team player.
His networking on the political turf is phenomenal as he is at home with both the political elites as well as those at the grassroots.
Ever effervescent and boisterous, the dedication of the two term governor of Abia State (1999 – 2007), as a very good party man could be gleaned from the statement he made in 2023.
The detribalized Senator said: ” There is nothing personal about my choice of candidate for 2023 presidential election. I am a member of APC and our candidate is Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu. Why should I work against the party? Elections go along party lines, not tribal lines.”
An early starter, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu since his foray into politics has maintained a steady float on the political scene. First elected into the Federal House of Representatives in 1992, the maverick politician was in 1999 under the banner of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elected the 2nd Executive Governor of Abia, God’s Own State. He functioned in that capacity for two terms. For his quick service delivery especially with regard to the provision of road development in Aba during his first term, former President Olusegun Obasanjo banded him Action Governor. On the expiration of his tenure, OUK contested the 2007 presidential election as the presidential candidate of Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA). He founded the party and was it’s Board of Trustees (BOT) chairman. Futuristic and always calculative, when he perceived that his political future in PPA was bleak, Orji Uzor Kalu, the master strategist resigned as the BOT chairman of the party and joined All Progressive Congress (APC)
A dogged fighter, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu challenged then incumbent Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Chief Mao Ohuabunwa. By his oratorical prowess and superior issues based campaign, coupled with his outstanding performance as governor, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, the jinx breaker doused Senator Ohuabunwa at the polls, beating him with over 10,000 votes and thus became a Distinguished Senator of the 9th Senate.
Again in 2023, the political tactician repeated the feat by coasting to victory as a member of the 10th National Assembly.
In the past five years plus, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, an altruistic leader has been rendering effective and qualitative representation to his Abia North constituents.
People-centric and a service oriented leader, Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has taken his representation of Abia North at the Upper Chamber beyond law making. To ensure that his constituents enjoy the dividends of democracy, OUK has influenced and facilitated the inclusion of many projects in successive national budgets.
